  Built at the foot of Mt.Otoko-yama and along the meanders of the Houjou River, Yawata city and its scenery were depicted in poetry from the Heian era (784-1192). Later, during the Edo period (1603-1868), an anthology of renka poetry praises 8 wonders of Yawata city some of which are "The Fireflies of the Houjou river" and "Moon over the Ango bridge".

  Both the Ango Bridge and the Houjou River are an important part of Yawata city's identity as they are connected to
Iwashimizu Hachiman-gu's annual festival: the Kochou no mai (dance of the butterfly) is performed on the bridge and
the ceremony is conducted on the riverside on September 15-th.
